Gifts for Xavier
Set beneath the soft desert light of southern Arizona, Gifts for Xavier honors Mission San Xavier del Bac, the centuries-old Catholic mission just south of Tucson. Known as the “White Dove of the Desert,” San Xavier rises from the Sonoran landscape on the land of the Tohono O’odham people, where the village of Wa:k existed long before the mission itself. Jesuit missionary Father Eusebio Francisco Kino established a mission there in 1692, and construction of the church standing today began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. Its white stucco walls, twin towers, ornate Baroque façade, and richly decorated interior have made it one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in the Southwest.
In Gifts for Xavier, the grandeur of the mission is balanced by the quiet life unfolding before it. A mother and child make their way across the dusty ground as a small cart, laden with flowers, rests nearby—a humble offering beneath the soaring walls of San Xavier. The painting imagines the generations of ordinary people who have approached this place carrying flowers, prayers, burdens, and gratitude.
More than three centuries after Father Kino first arrived at Wa:k, San Xavier remains an active Catholic parish serving the Tohono O’odham community, making it not simply a monument to the past, but a living place of worship and tradition. Gifts for Xavier reflects that continuity—a meeting of faith, family, culture, and the enduring beauty of a sacred place.
